The Official Classification of 1855 listed Haut Brion, Lafite, Latour and Margaux as premier crus (first growths). In 1973 Mouton-Rothschild was elevated from second to first growth status.
In 1955 St Emilion was classified and Ausone and Cheval Blanc officially became first growths, though both of these châteaux have now left the classification. The only official St Emilion first growths are Pavie and Figeac. To this day, Pomerol remains unclassified but Pétrus and Le Pin are unofficially referred to as first growths.
