Super Tuscans are wines that break away from the traditional laws which govern geographical appellations in Italy. The idea of the Super Tuscan came from a decision by certain producers to use non-traditional grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, effectively placing their wines outside of the DOC/DOCG classifications that were in place.
The original Super Tuscan, Sassicaia, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and, like other Super Tuscans, its quality is such that it is now an iconic brand in its own right. Production is small and quality is high, meaning that these wines are very desirable and fetch very high prices.
