This great second growth vineyard is majestically situated situated on a well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometre along the Gironde estuary in the southern section of St Estèphe. The vines are planted north-south, enabling the grapes to take full advantage of the sun throughout the day. The dominant north-west winds dispel excessive humidity when it rains. The vineyard slopes down toward the Gironde, providing ideal drainage.
Recently purchased and re-invigorated by the Bouygues family, large amounts of money have been spent on stunning new facilities, and the château is on scorching form. Outstanding wines were produced here in 2009, 2010, 2016 and 2018 as well as a potential wine of the vintage in 2014. The 2019, 2020 & 2022 vintages are all candidates for the wine of the vintage; William Kelley writes in his note on the 2022 “this only confirms Montrose's status as a de facto first growth and unquestionably one of the contemporary Médoc's very greatest estates.”
