The 2011 Batailley has a strict, fresh, graphite tinged bouquet with more fruité than its peers, very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, taut and linear, very good tension here with that vein of graphite running through to the finish. Classy. An attractive nose of creme de cassis, earth and oak jumps from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored wine. A classic, impressive effort from the Casteja family, this 2011 transcends the vintage character, and is an unqualified success as well as a major sleeper of the vintage. Structured, rich, medium to full-bodied, pure and layered, it should be at its finest in 3-4 years, and keep for two decades. Drink 2017 - 2037
This is chewy, with dried-berry and stone character, plus hints of hazelnut. Full and juicy with firm tannins. Lasts a long time on the finish. Second wine of La Mission. Better in 2016.
A well situated vineyard in Pauillac that can be relied upon to produce a decent wine at a fair price. The 2011 was produced from yields of 38hl/ha and is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, elevage in 55% new oak. This Chateau is a reliable source of "proper claret" and in 2011 the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon gives it a classic Pauillac character. This is very impressive. Lots of cassis fruit and a plump mid-palate with very well integrated tannins. A fine balance of black fruit, spicy oak, graphite and cigar box. Really rather impressive.
The nose is very black fruited and quite tight but the fruit on the palate has sweetness. Blackcurrant and black cherry are backed by dark chocolate and liquorice the richness of flavour giving flesh towards the back. There is complexity the layers of flavour giving interest and although the finish is firm there is a good weight of fruit coming through.
Robust, rather earthy fruit, then a touch of violets to lift it and a hint of leather, good wine, good future. Drink 2015-2025.
This is a solid, muscular, dense plum-colored wine with earthy cassis aromas as well as flavors. Medium to full-bodied, tannic and fresh, with a crisp profile, this husky Pauillac will require time. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030.
This year, the 2011 is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest ever), 11% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc cropped at 38hl/ha between 14th and 26th September. During the growing season they had to undertake two green harvests and also sorted the crop twice. The nose is reticent at first and demands coaxing from the glass. It eventually reveals blackberry, cedar, a touch of oyster shell and just a very faint hint of orange blossom. It is nicely composed, although it does not have the bravura penetration of the 2010 or 2009. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins on the entry. It demonstrates fine weight and cohesion, good substance and depth of fruit whilst the finish is a little sinewy with touches of spice inflecting the blackberry and briary fruit. Fine and unashamedly very classic, as one would expect for Batailley. Tasted April 2012.
This has very fresh currants, minerals and graphite on the nose. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a minty, light wood finish with pretty fruit. 11% Merlot, 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.
