This 25 hectare property in Margaux is owned by the Miailhe family who used to own Pichon Lalande and a part of Château Palmer. Vineyard plantings are split evenly between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller a smaller proportion of Petit Verdot and a little Cabernet Franc also planted. The vines average 30 years of age with some going back to the 1920s. The quality has improved enormously recently and the 2015 was very highly praised (quite rightly) by the critics. The consultant is Hubert de Bouard of Angélus.
The 2023 is 49% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. 115,000 bottles to be produced. Edouard feels that it is close to the quality of 2019 and 2020 and that it is "delicate, silky, charming and very Margaux" .
Exhibiting aromas of dark berries and sweet new oak, the 2023 Siran is medium to full-bodied, dense and youthfully structured. It's a solid effort.
The 2023 Siran, picked September 11 to 29, has a well-defined bouquet that is not as complex as the previous vintage. It is focused and delineated, with black fruit mixed with graphite and melted tar, almost Saint-Julien in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite minerally and lively without the depth of the 2022, yet rather elegant and refined on the finish. This constitutes a very gracious Margaux and as I tried second and third bottles towards the end of my trip, it just seemed to get better and better.
Bright ruby in colour, the nose here is a little muddled at the moment, with an earthy, wild fruit character and smoky undertone. The palate is chalky, with papery tannins and good midweight fruit. Quite structured, it will need a year or two in bottle. If the nose can find some clarity, this will be an enjoyable wine for the mid term.
Wow. This is really well done with plenty of al-dente fruit character, bright acidity and firm, fine tannins that are already well integrated. Medium-bodied. Crunchy.
An enjoyably sculpted Siran, plenty of depth to the tannins, balanced, juicy and inky, with crushed pure liqourice root, bluebuerry and cassis pastille, rose petals and mint. This is delicious, with tension and a mouthwatering finish, great stuff from owner Edouard Miaihle and winemaker Marjolaine Defrance. 35% new oak for ageing. A buy.
The 2023 Siran is a rich, earthy Margaux. Cherry, tobacco, dried herbs and scorched earth add to an impression of rustic, wild power. This Siran has a ton of power, but incisive tannins give an impression of untamed intensity. Tasted two times.
49% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Cask sample.
Bright and lifted on the nose with layered fruit on the palate. Firmly structured. Serious stuff. Should age. GV? (JL) 14%
