A wine of grand cru depth and dimension even in this challenging vintage, the 2013 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens delivers a reserved bouquet of sweet red fruits, spices, candied peel and subtle espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and layered, with excellent concentration, satiny tannins and a long, chewy finish that's lent delineation by the wine's tangy acids. The only missing ingredient is time.
This offers a step up in aromatic elegance with its cool, pure and highly complex nose of extract of plum, violets, soft earth and red cherry. There is excellent intensity and drive to the overtly mineral-laden and impressively concentrated flavors that possess a taut muscularity before culminating in an explosively long finale. This too possesses a mild backend edginess but in this case the maturity of the tannins is more complete and this has a higher likelihood of coming together with time in bottle.
