Aromas of crisp orchard fruit, toasted nuts and vanilla pod introduce the 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Crays, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural wine that's rich and gourmand, underpinned by lively acids and concluding with a saline finish. It's true to the site and has turned out well.
This is the first vintage with Premier Cru status. The soils here are very thin and very stony, limiting the growth of the grapes and delaying their ripening. Made from the free run juice, this was fermented in barrels (25% new). In 2020 the juices picked for this wine had very little settling and were very rich in lees - adding tension and preserving fruit. Fermentation finished at the end of November before maturation in barrel for 8 months. Oily citrus and fresh apricot on the nose here, which is ripe with stone fruit and honeyed nuts. The palate is round and full, offering generous stone and even tropical fruit in abundance. This fat, generous and intense wine will be a real crowd-pleaser from youth, where it offers a veritable fruit punch through to a long finish.
