Moderate wood and menthol influences stop short of overshadowing the spicy black cherry, raspberry, violet and warm earth scents. There is both very good volume and vibrancy to the powerful middle weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract on the tannic, serious and robust finale. This compact effort won't win any awards for refinement, but it is certainly doesn't lack for character.
The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots (Domaine Louis Jadot) displays aromas of smoky blackberries, rich soil tones and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and expressive, with a generous core of fruit and chalky tannins. A new domaine bottling derived from the holdings of Prieur-Brunet that debuted in 2017, this parcel is situated quite near the route nationale, from the lower part of this large premier cru.
Plump with red fruits, and sweet with spice, this is intense and juicy on the nose. Ripe with cherry fruits and smooth with cherry-skin like tannins, this is supple, satiny and very approachable. A little sweet spice marks the oak on the back end, but it is subtle and integrated. The chalky texture builds through to the finish and confirms the ageability for this wine despite its approachability.
