The 2015 Hunting Hill Chardonnay has to shrug off a bit of reduction, eventually revealing a gorgeous bouquet of lemon curd, yellow flowers and lime, very focused and brimming with vigor. The palate is extremely well balanced with a perfectly pitched line of acidity. This just seems to have a natural flow from start to finish and feels very long. Superb. Tasted at the Kumeu River Chardonnay vertical in London.
The 2015 Hunting Hill Chardonnay displays a youthful restraint, yet nonetheless delivers an exciting array of stone fruit, pink grapefruit, ginger and marzipan notes with subtle hints of orange blossoms, crushed stones and lightly buttered toast. Medium bodied and tightly woven, is has a lively backbone supportting the generous flavor layers, finishing with great length and depth. As usual - just gorgeous!
Stone fruit the nose is bright and fresh struck flints gun smoke. Fleshy pink grapefruit the hint of toast gives mid richness generosity with under the rich mix of flavours some tangerine giving a balancing freshness the finish is long with lingering fruit. 2018-25
Toast, struck-flint and fresh citrus fruit on the nose, this layered and complex wine is very mineral and youthful at this stage. With great tension of fresh fruits and flinty smoke from the new oak, there is still great power and intensity of fruit layered through the mid palate. Still youthful, but with perfect balance and concentration on the finish, this will be yet another long-lived and very fine example of Hunting Hill.
Very green, juicy and fluid somehow. Great density and balance on the palate. Truly superior wine. Long and reverberant. A great Chardonnay by any measure.
Drink 2018-2032
Very citrus-focused nose with overtly minerally crushed stony notes. Some sweet fermentation-derived leesy florals, too. An extremely distinctive wine in the set of single site Kumeu chardonnays. The palate continues the flinty, mineral theme, with chiselled shape and pithy grapefruit bitterness that really smacks the finish into place. Drink now.
Rather closed on the nose and slightly funky from reduction, but very concentrated on the palate. This effortlessly marries power and freshness. The long finish is almost steely but enormously refreshing, too. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
Supple and aromatic, offering a lovely mix of lemon blossom and butterscotch flavors on a creamy, juicy body. Gains momentum on the long, expressive finish. Drink now through 2022
Restraint again. Very clean. Pure. A hint of lime. And punchy, buzzy fruit in the mouth. These are edgier than the Coddingtons. Very much a Coche, etc, style though this is more exotic. Seriously good.
