Very aromatic and brilliant with dried flowers and berries. Intriguing. Full-bodied and very structured. Flavors of white pepper, currants and berries. Great structure. What a second wine! Drink in 2022.
The 2014 Chapelle d'Ausone came across quite plush when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle it has certainly attained a more classic style without compromising the satisfying delineation and focus. There is plenty of fresh red cherry, crushed strawberry and loganberry fruit to savor, an undercurrent and limestone that percolates through. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very refined and focused with superb tension and nuance. This just glides across the mouth, not a million miles away from the 2014 La Clotte in style, blessed with a very persistent finish. Drink Date 2020-2040
50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. 85% new oak.
Pretty smart and broad nose with superior notes but not much concentration. Decidedly superior and good for early drinking.
Drink 2023-2029
Starting with the second wine of Ausone, the 2015 Chapelle d'Ausone checks in as roughly 45% each of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a screaming good wine offering notes of black raspberries, licorice, smoked earth, and exotic flowers. With fabulous opulence, full-bodied richness, ripe tannin, and a stacked mid-palate, it’s a serious wine that will benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for two decades. 2020 - 2040
There's no shortage of new oak on this young wine (85% to be precise) and it's yet to fully integrate, but what lies beneath it is typically elegant and refined. It's quite a forward wine with grassy, sweet flavours and fine-boned tannins.
The Chapelle d'Ausone 2014 is a blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 4 and 15 October and aged in 85% new oak for what will be around 18 months. It has a plush blueberry and boysenberry-scented bouquet, with a hint of warm gravel developing with aeration. The palate is sweet on the entry with rounded red berry fruit and well-judged acidity. Although it does not have enormous persistence on the finish, it is both focused and harmonious. There is nothing extravagant here but who cares when there is more than enough freshness already sutured into this deuxième vin. Drink: 2019 - 2032
Powerful and very rich with blueberries, minerals and violets. Full body, firm tannins and a long finish. Racy and refined. Second wine of Ausone
