This brilliant blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot (which was harvested very late) reveals complex aromas of lead pencil shavings, burning embers, black currants, cherries, and blackberries as well as a subtle smoky charcoal component. Medium to full-bodied and spicy with sweet tannin and an opulent, fleshy personality, it is a terrific effort from this great Pessac-Leognan vineyard. Consume it now and over the next 15+ years.
Rich and fruity, with blackberry, toasted oak and hints of coffee. Medium- to full-bodied, with a good core of fruit and a medium finish. Well-made for the vintage. 7,080 cases made
Very deep purple. Ripe, toasty nose. Rather attention-grabbing. Slightly formulaic winemaking and very slightly jammy rather than deeply terroir-driven flavours but very competently made. Neat, refreshing tannins on the finish.
The 2004 Pape-Clement, which may ultimately rival the more evolved and sensual 2003, is a virile, masculine, dense ruby/purple-colored effort exhibiting scents of licorice, black fruits, earth, and a hint of truffles. Structured, dense, medium to full-bodied, and potentially longer-lived than the 2003, but neither as charming nor opulent, it should be at its finest between 2008-2020+.
The most concentrated wine of Graves, Pape-Clement may be as profound as the first-growth, Haut-Brion. The deep ruby/purple-colored 2004 exhibits a fragrant bouquet of flowers, camphor, earth, and red as well as black fruits. Medium-bodied, surprisingly textured and rich, with decent acidity, a long finish, and moderate but sweet tannin, it is an exceptionally successful wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+
