The 1999 Léoville Poyferré is a wine that I always enjoyed, though I have not tasted it for the last 10 years. The bouquet has mellowed in the interim, though it retains seductive, almost effervescent red fruit mixed with undergrowth, hung game, fresh mint and pine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a menthol-tinged opening. This feels smooth but quite high-toned, that mintiness continuing right to the finish. Maybe in recent years it has dispensed with some of its structure and depth, but it remains a finely crafted Saint-Julien going strong at 20 years of age. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate. Drink 2019-2032.
Delicious red. Plenty of plum and blackberry character on the nose. Medium bodied with light silky tannins and a delicate, fruity finish. Best after 2003. 20000 cases made.
Good inky/purple colour, ripe black fruits on the palate. Persistent and well-balanced.
Dark, vigorous, peppery edges to ample summer pudding fruit.
Another top flight effort from this estate...outstanding concentration, purity and balance. This delicious 1999 will drink well young.
Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. One of my favourite ‘99s, this has a very lifted, well-defined nose that eschews the more opulent bouquet that Didier sometimes conjures. Blackberry, cedar, raspberry leaf, pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, not quite as ebullient as the bottle in Bordeaux last year, but it has great vivacity and purity towards the finish. Sappy blackberry, boysenberry and strawberry with a touch of Asian spice. Excellent. Drink now-2025. Tasted June 2009.
