Loads of blueberry, black cherry and dusty, loamy soil notes as well as hints of herbs, licorice and incense jump from the glass of this well-endowed, supple wine. Tannins are sweet and the acidity sufficient to give delineation to the wine. Full-bodied and impressively endowed, it should drink well over the next 10-15 years.
The 2010 Barde-Haut is a delicious, seductive style of St.-Emilion made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Proprietress Helene Garcin-Leveque purchased the estate in 2000 and has been pushing quality ever since.
Tasted at the chateau. Matured in around 80% new oak for 21 months, the Barde-Haut has a dense, comparatively toasty nose with scents of macerated black cherries, dark plum, a touch of marmalade and Asian spices. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, succulent tannins and plenty of opulent black fruit that is counterbalanced by the silver thread of acidity. This is a modern take on the 2010, but it is very well balanced with a pure, velvet-textured finish. Tasted November 2012.
Blackish purple. Very rich start on the palate then tarry - like licking a road! Bitter finish. Over extracted? Shame because I love their new carbon-neutral winery!
Dense, ripe layered fruit. Rich, full, sweet extract but balanced by freshness. Firm, ripe tannins. Long, persistent finish. Drink 2017-2027.
Readers looking for an exuberant, nearly flamboyant, exceptionally well-made St.-Emilion should check out this effort from the Garcin family, which has done such a fabulous job with their Graves, Haut-Bergey, and Pomerol, Clos l'Eglise. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc from a beautifully situated vineyard near Troplong Mondot and Trottevielle, this cuvee reveals terrific fruit on the attack, mid-palate and finish. Abundant cassis and black cherry characteristics are presented in a juicy, savory, broadly textured style. The vintage's freshness, precision and zesty acids give uplift to a big, opulent, fleshy wine. Consume it over the next decade or more.
A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The Barde-Haut 2010 has a ripe nose of mulberry, blackberry and cassis with a touch of crushed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of very ripe Merlot, fleshy sweet fruit that is lacking just a little freshness and tension towards the finish. This was a very late malolactic that means the sulphur is denuding brightness a little at this stage, hence my plus sign. God knows how it tasted like to those critics who sampled it in early March. Tasted April 2011.
