A deep ruby/purple color is followed by classic notes of black currants, cedar, tobacco leaf, and spice box. Displaying better integration of new oak as well as more elegance and finesse than usual (Lagrange tends to be blatantly oaky in many vintages), it possesses sweet fruit, pretty flavors, and a clean, supple-textured finish. Enjoy it over the next 12-14 years.
Sweet damson fruit with a touch of butterscotch, tobacco leaf and cigar box coming through as it opens. Archetypal St Julien, with finesse and elegance, fine tannins, just a storming wine that you will want to share. A vintage that is proving hugely successful in St Julien right now, as I found with a recent tasting of Gruaud Larose, really suggesting that these 2001s are in a sweet spot - although no great rush to drink up. Jacques and Eric Boissenot consultants. Just 29 bottles left at the estate.
Dark, healthy crimson. Round and sweet and much, much juicier and more supple than most of these wines. Quite notably different! Lighter than most – sleeker and more polished. Very much a stylistic thing….
An irregular performer from cask, the 2001 has been consistently monolithic, yet also concentrated and powerful. It possesses a dense, thick purple color in addition to an aggressive overlay of heavy new oak, sweet black currants, cherries, licorice, and smoke. Oak is present, but the finish has been angular as well as austere. If the tannin melts away and the oak becomes less evident, this 2001 may merit an outstanding rating. It is a big, muscular, structured style of Lagrange that has yet to reveal its true colors. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.
This may be the most extracted, concentrated St.-Julien I tasted. It is an ambitious effort, possessing a dense, thick purple color in addition to an aggressive overlay of heavy new oak, and sweet black currants, cherries, licorice, smoke, and coffee notes. The oak is out of sync, and the finish is angular as well as austere. If the tannin melts away and the oak becomes less evident, this 2001 may merit an outstanding rating. It is a big, muscular, structured style of Lagrange. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.
