Volnay Les Champans, Domaine des Comtes Lafon 2021

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Meursault 1er Cru Porusots unwinds in the glass with aromas of pear, crisp green apple, white flowers, toasted almonds and bread dough. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, it's a racy, vibrant wine, the cooler vintage tempering the somewhat open-knit profile that this climat sometimes displays.

Picked on the first day. 4 barrels from half a hectare. Mid crimson. The fruit comes across as somewhat drier in style than Clos des Chênes. But there is greater density on the palate, from start to finish, slightly firmer structure at the back and with good length. Stays in the mouth with notable persistence. Drink from 2028-2034.

The Champans seemed to me a significant step up in quality among the reds in Lafon’s cellar. There is a lovely, ripe black plum fruit with notes of earth and smoke. The texture was tannic, yet the tannins seemed fine-grained, with no astringent edge. A lively, fresh acidity pulled the wine to a winningly long finish. The grapes come from the domaine’s half-hectare in Champans, and are carefully sorted and destemmed before a gentle fermentation on native yeast and ageing in mainly older casks. (Drink between 2025-2045)

Notes of blackberries, cherries and spices introduce Lafon's 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Champans, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine built around lively acids and melting tannins, concluding with an orange-inflected finish. It's unusually suave and charming for a young Champans.
