Always a fine Barsac, this 18 hectare property also produces miniscule quantities of a cuvée called "L'Extravagant" in some vintages - including 2018. 86% Semillon, 14% Sauvignon Blanc.
The 2018 Doisy-Daëne has a well-defined bouquet, a little reticent at first but opening to offer scents of wild honey, white flowers and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, viscous opening, very pure and full of tension, more so than other 2018 Sauternes/Barsacs. Very persistent on the finish. This is an excellent Doisy-Daëne. 2023 - 2048
Serious density and spiciness with a full body, lovely sweetness and a flavorful, spicy finish. Lovely botrytis.
Poised and focussed, this gentle golden wine is easily one of the most successful of the vintage here. It has the beautiful pull between sweetness and acidity that not everyone has achieved in this late-harvest year. The texture is luscious and silky, but the flavours are bright and heading towards tart, with notes of lime, papaya and passion fruit. It's very good quality, showing clear minerality with a sense of life and freshness. A delicious wine, great job. 30% new oak.
Drinking Window 2022 - 2040
Syrupy pineapple nose and a touch of spice, and what seems like sulphur. Better on the palate, broad and sweet and spicy. Decent acidity but a bit rustic. Better on the second tasting too.
Drink 2025-2033
Honeyed and tropical on the nose, with baked vanilla and ripe pineapple. The palate is powerful and very honeyed, showing more dried fruit than the earthy influence of botrytis. There is some marmalade but more baked vanilla and sweet spices from the oak. The acidity is vibrant and refreshing, carrying the full bodied richness on the finish.
(100 Semillon) Lovely and balanced, rather honeyed and lush, but still not quite as sweet as I would like. I sense that there is more to come from this wine as it unfurls.
The 2018 Doisy-Daëne has a superb bouquet with detailed acacia honey, quince and orange pith aromas that soar from the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine definition, poised and focused with impressive mineralité towards the finish that sports a welcome bitter aftertaste. Superb. Drink 2023-2052.
