This famous Pomerol property has been run by the Moueix family since the 1950s and produces a wine that is always a classic of the appellation and keenly sought-after. The vineyard is now 18.7 hectares after more parcels were purchased on the plateau of Pomerol and Château Providence amalgamated (the lesser plots - some 5 hectares - being relegated to Lagrange à Pomerol). The vineyard is planted with 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and (rare for Pomerol) 3% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus has realized all the potential it showed in barrel and stands out as a real success on the Right Bank. Wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, dark berries, licorice, anise, violets and baking chocolate, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a velvety attack that segues into a suave, seamless mid-palate that exhibits good depth and concentration. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus was picked September 23 to October 6. The nose came as a surprise: very opulent and high-toned, too much if compared to the Hosanna or Trotanoy. In fact, re-tasting from another bottle later in the day, it comes across not unlike the Bélair-Monange. The palate follows suit in an unashamedly rich and quite ostentatious vein, delivering very good depth, with pain grillé infusing the lush red fruit. I requested a second bottle. This was quite similar, perhaps with slightly less volatility and definitely with more freshness on the palate. Difficult to judge; I look forward to re-tasting in bottle.

The 2021 is a blend of 95% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot harvested between 23rd September and 6th October. Bright purple colour in the glass. Very fine frangrance, full of cherry, plum blossoms and sweeter, roasted cherries. This is very finely spiced, subtle vanilla integrates nicely into the fruit. The palate has a deeply savoury undertone despite the intense fruit at the core. Silky, refined tannins give a velvet texture, and there is real persistence here. This will age well. Chalky and very long with a saline, refined edge. Toasty but bursting with fresh fruit on the finish.

Very polished with fine tannins that finish intensely. It’s a medium-to full-bodied red with focus. Blackberry and blackcurrant flavors. Hints of tobacco and nutmeg, too.

The 2021 La Fleur-Petrus is a blend of 95% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it comes galloping out of the glass like a thoroughbred, featuring very pure scents of fresh blackberries, crunchy black plums, and Morello cherries, plus suggestions of red roses, cast-iron pan, and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, the palate is very finely textured and beautifully nuanced with loads of mineral and floral sparks among the intense red and black fruit layers, finishing with great length. This is a gorgeous Pomerol - bravo!

Silky tannins, not a word I am using often with this vintage (and one that I see only after tasting in bottle that I also used during the En Primeur tasting note). The emphasis is on blue fruits, black truffles, chamomile tea and bitter chocolate, with blueberry, cloves, liqourice root and rose petals, slender fruit structure but full of finesse and pleasure. September 23 to October 6 harvest, 50% new oak for ageing.

95% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Cask sample.
The winner in the J-P Moueix stable this year, in my book. Elegant but restrained with just that bit more density on the mid palate than the other wines. Fine texture and tannins with drive on the finish. Elegance and balance combined. (JL)

The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is performing nicely, exhibiting aromas of plums, cherries, sweet soil tones, loamy soil and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's lively and charming. Classically proportioned and nicely balanced, if it takes on additional depth with élevage, I'd expect it to land at the upper end of my bracketed score.

Subdued on the first nose, this is well constructed, and takes its time to unroll. Violet and gunsmoke emerge first, followed by tons of blackberry and redcurrant fruit, cocoa bean, smoked liquorice, earth and black truffles. Successful, gorgeous silky texture, less exuberant than the past few years but nuanced, seductive, overperforms the vintage and is extremely easy to recommend. One to look out for. September 23 to October 6 harvest.
