This Saint Estephe Chateau makes wines that are true to the appellation with impressive depth and concentration. Usually modestly priced en primeur. The 51 hectare vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Recent vintages have impressed us here. This Chateau always performs well in blind tastings - often being mistaken for Montrose - and was a star of "Southwold 2015" and "Ten Years On 2009".
The 2019 Meyney has a divine bouquet, so pure and winsome with floral red berry scents, beautifully integrated new oak and superb precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy to the point where you can almost overlook the backbone of this Saint-Estèphe. It could have been blowsy, yet it retains superb balance and feels luxuriant and long on the finish. This is a stellar showing easily eclipsing its performances either in barrel or just after bottling. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drink 2026-2055
Tasted blind at Southwold. Deep colour with a smoky, rich nose of cedar and sandalwood together with cassis fruit. There is real stuffing and structure here, balancing cool but ripe black fruit with bold chalky tannins in a typically Medocain style. Dense and impressive, this is a serious Cabernet-led style with a sappy, still slightly firm finish. Great typicity with good length, it should unfurl nicely over the next decade in bottle and provide excellent drinking pleasure.
Notes of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, vanilla, licorice and dark chocolate with touches of earthiness and nutmeg-like spice. Medium-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and delicious fruit. Polished and refined. Try after 2023.
Deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Meyney strides confidently out of the glass with classic notes of cassis, warm plums and baked blackberries plus hints of cedar chest, bay leaves, pencil lead and clove oil plus a waft of underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate has a generous core of ripe black fruits with a slight touch of oak poking through and a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with impressive length.
Tasted blind. Lifted, perfumed. Subtle, with a savoury streak running through it. Far from massive but nicely judged and appetising. Cool and sophisticated. GV 13.5%. Drink 2027– 2045
Opaque purple in colour, with a nose of fresh blackcurrant and graphite. The palate is powerful and savoury, fresh bramble fruits intermingling with cedar and tobacco. The tannins are crunchy and mouthcoating, providing weight, structure and mineral depth. A long, sinewy finish is bolstered by a burst of ripe cassis fruit.
Aromas of sweet cherries and berries mingled with tobacco, loamy soil and petals introduce the 2019 Meyney, a medium to full-bodied, seamless and lively wine with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and an attractive sense of completeness. This is an understated but charming Saint-Estèphe that has turned out nicely in bottle. Drink 2025-2045.
The 2019 Meyney has a well-defined, fragrant, floral bouquet of ample red currant and cranberry fruit, touches of pencil shaving and smoke emerging with aeration, followed later by the tertiary aspect that one associates with the appellation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, black pepper and graphite, tightening toward the finish but still showing fine length. This is a very fine Meyney that may warrant a higher score down the line. 2024 - 2048
The 2019 Meyney is well defined on the bouquet, leaning a little more towards the red side of the fruit spectrum with raspberry, wild strawberry and floral scents. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. It has a citric element from start to finish, a taut line of acidity with light spicy notes towards the finish that shares the brininess of stablemate Grand Puy Ducasse. Very fine. Tasted twice with consistent notes. 2024 - 2048
Aromas and flavors of blackberries and blueberries with walnut and coffee-bean notes. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a flavorful finish. Excellent, but not the 2018.
