Tasting Notes

1982 has never been my favorite vintage of Rioja, as this torrid summer generally produced wines that were a tad on the overripe side for my tastes, despite the reputation of the vintage being quite high amongst the producers themselves. That said, the 1982 Viña Real Reserva is a stellar example of this vintage and one of the best 1982 Rioja bottlings that I have had the pleasure to taste. The deep, pure and simply gorgeous nose soars from the glass in a blend of black cherries, cassis, coconut, a complex base of dark soil tones, a touch of dill, coffee bean and a lovely topnote of fresh nutmeg. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and velvety, with a great core of fruit, melting tannins, bright acids and outstanding length and grip on the focused and à point finish. This is a stellar 1982! (Drink between 2013-2040)
