Clos de Vougeot, Domaine Engel 1999

Tasting Notes

This too is hardly charming in style but the quality of the underlying material clearly says "grand cru" with its dense, ripe, black fruit, ripe dusty tannins and big flavors of earth and spice. A wine that will need 8 to 10 years to fully express itself though it should hold for a number of years thereafter.

Pale garnet. A really interesting wine that initially seemed a little diffuse and effete but as it was aerated it gained focus and concentration. Initially the nose was a bit old with lots of veginess and dustiness. Malty and then really quite concentrated, sweet and focused. It took on new vigour with the second pour and became more like the less gracious, structured Beaux Monts 1999 from Méo C served alongside. (Drink between 2008-2020)
