Pommard Grands Epenots, Domaine Michel Gaunoux 2012

Tasting Notes

The 2012 Grands Epenots from Domaine Gaunoux is an excellent young wine in the making, delivering depth and purity on both the nose and palate to go along with its customary, proper structural chassis. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a mix of cherries red plums, fresh herb tones, gamebird, a fine base of soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and impressively plush on the attack, with a sappy core, ripe, well-integrated tannins and lovely length and energy on the still quite youthful finish. Drink between 2025-2055

A more deeply pitched and well-layered nose exhibits plenty of earth character on the aromas of tea, red and dark currant and hints of spice. There is fine volume and plenty of punch on the concentrated and relatively large-scaled flavors that possess focused power on the strikingly persistent finish. This is serious and very firm yet not at all hard or even especially austere though there is a trace. In sum, this is an elegant Grands Epenots that will require at least a few years of bottle age and effortlessly reward 10 to 12. 2022+
