Tasting Notes

Pol Roger’s 1996 Winston Churchill is fabulous. One of the most expressive, complete 1996s today, the Winston Churchill is in a great spot. Butter, spice, almond and lemon oil notes meld together effortlessly in the glass. In 1996, the Winston Churchill is a clear overachiever. Best of all, it remains reasonably priced vis-à-vis its peers.

The structure of the 1996 vintage is softened by a fine, silky mousse in this intensely wrought bubbly. Fresh, with citrus, berry, nut and coffee aromas and flavours and a round finish. Drink now through 2015.

Evidently firm and focused on the nose, refined Chardonnay characteristics are coming through here despite the cuvees estimated 25/75 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (the exact blend is a secret). Perfectly ripe and good roundness to the fruit but with the classic structure and drive that the best 1996s can offer. This opens up on the palate with mouthwatering flavours of soft almond, delicate rose petal and clean white fruit notes, quite powerful and direct but with elegant sweetness from the fully ripened grapes. A streamlined, long and very fine length. A superb offering that delights now and will also keep for many years.

Disgorged 20 jul 05. Still pale gold. Very deep and sumptuous on the nose. Smells like a cross between red and white Côte de Beaune. Lots of lemon cream sensation and very fine bead. Explosive. Still tight and there's lots yet to come but certainly capable of giving great pleasure now. You almost feel it needs decanting there is so much there! Not especially long. More Pinot than in the past. Drink 2006 - 2020.

Bright gold with a lively mousse Deep, pungent nose features powerful scents of minerals, saffron, pear, lilac, buttered apple, pear, white peach and marzipan. Broad and improbably concentrated, the pear and apple flavors packing a huge punch and complicated by buttery, leesy tones. As rich and supple as this is, it also boasts brilliant cut. Finishes with expansive, exotic spice and pear notes, and superb focus and length. This spent nine years on its lees. Already delicious but I'd opt for holding this one for another decade before popping the cork.
