Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett VV, Zach Bergweiler-Prum Erben, Dr. Loosen 2019

Tasting Notes

AP: 01 21. The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Vielles Vignes, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was made from fruit harvested on over 100-year-old un-grafted vines in the prime Lammerterlay sector of the vineyard and was fermented and aged with extended oak aging and relying on traditional methods down to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Initially slightly restrained, it gradually opens up to offer a very delicate and refined nose of lemon, tangerine, minty herbs, aniseed, smoke, vineyard peach, acacia, and violet. The wine shows quite some richness at first, as plenty of creamy and juicy yellow fruits give some Spätlese intensity, before it proves more focused and precise in the very long finish. This richer styled Kabinett is superb. 2029-2049

The 2019 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Vieilles Vignes is part of Loosen's Bergweiler project, harvested from the oldest vines in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. It spent two years in barrel, was bottled in 2021 and was just released. The gentlest scent shows the smoothness of tender dried lemon balm and the serene lift of lemon peel. The palate manages to be light, dreamy, smooth and profound with citric brightness. This is superbly concentrated and so fine. (Medium) (Drink between 2028-2055)
