A well-situated vineyard in Pauillac that can be relied upon to produce a consistent wine of classic Médoc style and breeding. Quality has moved up a level in recent vintages whilst prices remain reasonable. The château has, since 2014, been producing a second wine "Lions de Batailley" and since 2018 a third wine "Pauillac de Batailley". This selection process has further increased the quality of the grand vin.
In 2025 the blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. As last year, they will produce some Marie-Jeanne formats (a rare three-bottles-in-one size that contains 2.25 litres). The harvest ran from September 4th to 19th. The yield was 28 hl/ha - slightly more than last year. The Castéja family have promised a very reasonable price this year. Batailley is always good value but in 2025 it should be released at under £150 per case of six.
The 2025 Batailley was picked between September 4 and 18 at around 26 hl/ha and is raised in 58% new oak barrels. It has a backward nose at first, opening with blackberry and crushed stone aromas, with a welcome whiff of the Gironde estuary underlying the fruit. Fine delineation and unashamedly classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy/chalky tannins, good density, fresh and saline, with a cohesive and you could say, "old school" finish. Very fine, very Bordeaux, very Batailley! Purplish hue in the glass. The wood seems a little turned down this year, allowing the expressive, pure fruit to shine on the nose. The result is a fine blackcurrant purity with a little sweeter cherry and better integrated savoury spice. This follows on the palate, which has bright and refreshing acidity, direct and ripe fruit and just a little sheen from toasty new wood. This is a Batailley with poise and presence - a very promising showing from barrel.

Balanced and textural, restrained power with slow and steady unrolling. Floral nuances, crayon and graphite, crushed rocks, delicious, and full of appellation typicity. 58% new oak, Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consultant winemakers. 2029-2044.
The 2025 Batailley marries power with finesse. Crème de cassis, new leather, spice, menthol and lavender caress the palate. The 2025 is quite deep and has great balance. This brooding, potent Pauillac has so much to offer. All it needs is time for the tannins to soften. 2035-2065.
