At a recent “anteprima” tasting of 2021 Barolos, one producer in particular stood out to us: La Morra based Voerzio Martini.
Voerzio Martini is a small estate run by siblings Mirko and Federica Martini, nephew and niece of legendary ‘Barolo boy’ Roberto Voerzio. Despite the famous connection and the impressive quality of their wines, they remain under the radar and a hidden gem. Showed in a lineup that included the likes of Burlotto, Cavallotto and Paolo Conterno, the wines held their own and more.
The Martinis own and farm a handful of plots spread across historic sites in La Morra, Barolo, Verduno and Serralunga. Farming is organic and winemaking is with a light hand, with shrewd use of oak for ageing. The results are certainly impressive: the wines have a delicious vibrancy of fruit, grace and delicacy of tannins that seem to encapsulate the excellent 2021 vintage, one that has been described as a cross between 2019 and 2016.
There are four wines to pick from: their well-priced Barolo DOCG and three single vineyard wines, our pick of which is the Monvigliero. All four wines wines come recommended by the FV team.
