Meursault remains one of the most sought-after wines for lovers of white Burgundy; there are few substitutes for the blend of minerality and richness that can only be found in this particular corner of the Côte-d'Or. The problem is that over the past few years it has become increasingly expensive.

We have a solution to this: 2020 Meursault Les Clous, Bouchard which we can offer £455 per dozen in bond.

The single vineyard site of 'Les Clous' is a lieu-dit renowned for producing a superior Meursault. The vineyard lies high up on the Meursault slope, with Les Tillets to the south and Vireuils to the north.  Maison Bouchard own just under half of it, in three separate plots that cover both the top and the bottom of the vineyard.

2020 was an almost universally successful vintage for white Burgundy – Jasper Morris MW writes that “the wines taste like some of the most classical white Burgundy vintages of recent times: 2017 with a proportion of 2014 added in”. We agree and have opened multiple bottles of the 2020 Clous over the past six months: it is quintessential Meursault, with just the right balance of apple and citrus fruit, stony minerality and fresh acidity. Put simply: it is one of those wines that tastes exactly as it should.

Finding a good Meursault for less than £500 per case is increasingly challenging these days: at £455 per case in bond, this is not only the least expensive Meursault on our list, it is easily one of the best-priced single-vineyard Meursaults available and, moreover, comes in at a full £135 per 12 less than the 2022.

This textbook white Burgundy is deliciously fresh and ready to drink now. Our stock is lying with us and is ready to go.

Mid lemon colour, a little bit of reduction, attractive volume here from this plateau site, the fruit offering some depth of flavour with lively tension. Ripe apple with a citrus tint, long and pleasing. Very good. ****

The 2020 Meursault Les Clous wafts from the glass with aromas of pear, grapefruit, hazelnuts, struck match, white flowers and Meyer lemon. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and expressive, it's an open, lively wine that concludes with a chalky finish.

Pale lemon in colour, this reveals a harmonious blend of sappy, smoky wood and fine ripe lemon and white pear on the nose. The palate is bright and vivid, with cleansing acidity cutting through notes of toasted cereals, buttery poached pears and lemon curd. The wood smoke offers savoury spice, matching the leesy, textural richness of the palate. A fine example of Meursault that offers typicity and approachability.
