This Saint Emilion property of 7 hectares is well situated on the plateau of Saint Emilion. Previously the wines were made by Nicolas Thienpont from Pavie Macquin and Beausejour Duffau. However in July 2017 the property was purchased by the owners of Chanel and it is now under the control of Nicolas Audebert from Château Canon. Consequently there is a significant change in the style of the wine into something much more sophisticated and smooth than before. The vineyard is planted with 75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc. There are some new plantings of Malbec, but these are not in production yet.

The 2023 is 59% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Franc and will be aged in 34% new oak as well as 10 amphoras. The yield was a healthy 45 hl/ha. Alcohol 14%.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Berliquet is the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, equipped with double the number of vats, permitting proper separation of blocks. That's especially important, as Berliquet is a more diverse terroir than Canon, and it can now be interpreted with much more precision. Offering up aromas of cherries, black raspberries, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, with a fleshy core of concentrated fruit, refined, chalky tannins and lively acids.

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, April 2024

The 2023 Berliquet was picked 23 September to October 5 at 45hL/ha, matured in 34% new oak plus 10 amphorae. Initially, the nose is quite backward and doesn't want to play. Give it a few swirls and it opens to reveal black cherries, blackcurrant and a distant tang of oyster shell emanating from limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a very harmonious entry. Finely weighted, tensile and slightly savory in style, this is very elegant, finishing with citrus-like freshness. Berliquet has definitely been in the ascendant in recent vintages, and this is another to add.

This estate continues its upward trajectory, the 2023 bursting with notes of craisins, gariguette strawberries and fresh red plum. Utterly charming, the pithy midweight fruit is laced with notes of violet, fresh vanilla bean and dewy raspberries. Seamless, with a long finish, this is a vibrant, moreish wine that should drink well early and provide real drinking pleasure in the mid-term.

Thomas Parker MW, Farr Vintners, April 2024

A plump and juicy wine with redcurrants and plums, as well as orange peel. Full and layered with round, juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Generous fruit in this vintage.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2024

A blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Berliquet has a pH of 3.53 and it is ageing in 10% amphorae and 90% oak barriques, of which 34% are new. It has a deep garnet-purple color and it hops from the glass with fragrant notes of wild blueberries, plum preserves, and kirsch, followed by hints of lilacs, fragrant soil, and cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is bright and energetic, with intense red and black berry layers and super-silky tannins, finishing with wonderful length and tension.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, May 2024

Heavy black pepper spice, good lift through the palate, powerful drive and energy, with sculpted blue and black fruits and a pumice stone scrape. Harvest September 13 to October 5, 45hl/ha yield. 45hl/ha yield, in organic conversion. Tasted twice.

The 2023 Berliquet marks another important step forward for this château. Floral aromatics are immediately alluring. Bright, sculpted fruit and vibrant acids convey finesse through to the saline, delineated finish. This is the first vintage made in the new cellar, which surely helps. Élevage is in French oak and amphora. Berliquet is all charm in 2023. Tasted four times. Drink 2027-2043.

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, April 2024

59% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.
Crimson hue. Attractive nose. Floral, red-fruit notes. Nothing forced. Palate fresh and dancing. Fine tannic frame but less fruit weight than 2022. (JL) 14%
Drink 2028 – 2038
