This leading Barsac property is one of the oldest in the region and has been producing wine since 1643. It is owned by the Baly family with technical and commercial input from Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Mouton). The 38.5 hectare vineyard is planted 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Barrel ageing extends for 18 months in 100% new oak.
The 2022 is 94% Semillon, 5% Sauvignon Blanc, 1% Muscadelle
The 2022 Coutet has a clean and precise bouquet with scents of white peach, apricot blossom, quince and saffron. It unfolds wonderfully in the glass but maintains a sense of control. The palate is very well balanced, with ample weight counterbalanced by a keen thread of acidity. There is a naturalness to this Coutet that I really appreciate. This is very fine. 2027 - 2047
Tempting dried fruit here with spice and floral character. Full and creamy with attractive acidity and a textural finish.
A blend of 75% Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc, and 2% Muscadelle, with 158 g/L residual sugar, the 2022 Coutet is pale to medium straw in color. After a little swirling, the nose erupts with gorgeous lime cordial, fresh grapefruit, and mandarin peel scents, followed by wafts of wet pebbles, freshly shaved ginger, and beeswax. The palate is vibrant and shimmery with fantastic intensity and tension, finishing long and layered.
Luscious and sweet, sticky dates and crème caramel flavours, balanced by orange zest and lime. There is interest and contrast here, but even at this exceptional Barsac estate, owned by the Baly family, it is hard not to crave a little more lift.
The 2022 Coutet has a beautifully-defined nose with pure botrytised fruit: tangerine, saffron, honeysuckle and orange rind hints. This has impressive focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous opening, fine acidity, pure and harmonious. A tensile and persistent finish drags you back for another sip. Superb. Drink 2027-2047.
