The old vine Gevrey villages bottling is truly exceptional in 2020 from Monsieur Bachelet. The bouquet is simply fabulous already, soaring from the glass in a blaze of black cherries, sweet dark berries, grilled meats, dark chocolate, woodsmoke, black minerality, a touch of new oak and an exotic topnote of anise. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and gorgeously sappy at the core, with a seamless structure, great soil signature, ripe, fine-grained tannins and a long, tangy and perfectly balanced finish. Stunning juice for an old vine villages bottling! (Drink between 2030-2075)
Bachelet's 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes once again incorporates his holdings in Les Evocelles, which didn't produce enough grapes to merit a separate vinification. Bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, spices and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with velvety tannins, lively acids and an elegant, seamless profile.
There was virtually no fruit in the Evocelles vineyard, so it has not been made separately this year. Jet black centre with purple rim. Rich but not cooked. At first, I found it hard to climb inside this wine. Then came an explosion of dark red and black fruit with a light pepperiness behind, long and fine with excellent energy.
