Mid mahogany in colour, decades of barrel ageing have given an intense, layered impression to the nose. Beeswax, old books, dates, dried figs and incense come together on an intoxicating nose that has a real sense of its age while remaining vibrant in equal measure. Time has concentrated the flavours on the palate but also acidity, giving a tension and cut to the structure that resembles very old and fine Madeira. The tannins are imperceptible, the dried fruit, roasted nuts and syrupy viscosity taking over. It is impressive for a wine to show such a sense of age yet offer such energy and life, but here this is accomplished effortlessly. With a minutes-long finish, this falls into the realm of a wine that could be enjoyed as a digestif on its own, rather than accompanied by food. Very impressive.
