Tasting Notes

Macushla comes from the Gibbston Valley near to where Alan Brady planted Central Otago's first Pinot Noir vines 40 years ago. The vines that made this wine were planted in 2003. Production in 2021 was 3540 bottles matured in French oak - 25% new. Bright ruby colour in the glass. Sweet red berries and fleshy cherries on the nose, together a hint of baking spices. The palate is soft and round, with generous and seductive fruit softening any tannic grip. Forward with an easy, moreish quality, there is still depth and complexity here. Notes of wood smoke, clove and cinnamon come through, adding to the polished mouthfeel. This is a generous but fine Pinot Noir that transparently displays its site's typicity. This is the fullest of the three wines made here. Excellent already and to be enjoyed over the coming decade.

Wild Irishman is the new project from the guru of Central Otago Pinot Noir - Alan Brady - and winemaker Brian Shaw. Both of whom come from Northern Ireland originally. Alan planted the first ever Pinot Noir vines in Central Otago back in 1982 in the Gibbston Valley. He has been a leading figure in the region ever since and was an original shareholder in Felton Road and a mentor to owner Nigel Greening. Further advice comes from Francois Millet former wine-maker of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue.
