This remarkable site has established itself as one of the world's great Syrah vineyards in less than a decade. Sourced from four blocks totally 4.5 hectares, Callie Louw's stunning red is just short of perfection this year, but is still brilliant, confirming the evolution in style of the Jamet-inspired 2018. Leafy, spicy, rose petal aromas are supported by pure red berry fruit, detailed tannins and the faintest hint of oak. 2022-32
The latest iteration of Porseleinberg Syrah is the best yet. Made from 100% Syrah fermented entirely in whole bunches, the wine is matured in 90% large foudres and 10% concrete eggs - with no new oak influence to preserve the purity and expression of fruit and terroir. Mid ruby colour in the glass, the nose is expansive and intense, unfurling with notes of hedgerow fruit, black pepper, bay leaf and violets. The palate is bright with summer fruits and precise in structure. There is the expected power of fruit yet it is more focused and less heavy than in previous years. This added precision makes for a wonderful delineation of fruit, spice and structure. The tannins are firm but ripe, building a sinewy frame through the mid-palate. Garrigue, fresh peppercorn, blueberry and red cherry intertwine on a long, harmonious finish. Outstanding.
330mm of rain, but cool temperatures. Stunted vines from multiple drought vintages gave small, concentrated, berries. Perhaps the best wine made at the estate, the nose to the 2019 is immediately engaging, marrying the purity of 2018 with the wild flair of 2017. Vibrant, peppery dark fruit meets a little game and wave upon wave of flowers. There is a little smoky reduction but it is complementary rather than dominating the nose. The palate is elegant yet intense, an explosion of fruits and flowers coating the tongue. The salty, chalky tannins build towards the back end with the hit of rosemary and wild herbs unique to Syrah made in this fashion. There is almost a smoked paprika edge to the fruit, which is as fascinating as it is delicious. This is a triumph, a wine that you can drink now or doubtless in 10-15 years time.
