Corton Charlemagne, Louis Jadot 2019

Tasting Notes

Complex and sensual nose of citrus and pineapple with a touch of melted butter, the powerful and highly structured palate energized by the driving mineral acidity that pushes the tightly wound finish out a long way. Drink or hold.

Aromas of confit citrus, crisp orchard fruit and mint mingle with hints of petrol and toasted bread in an incipiently complex bouquet, introducing the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, multidimensional and muscular wine built around serious reserves of structuring dry extract and girdled by lively acids. Long and chalky, this is very promising.

Clear bright pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is balanced, not showing the 14.5% alcohol on the label. Perhaps a little on the palate, along with some well-chosen oak. This is attractive and coherent all the way through. One for the longer term. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: September 2023.

Mid lemon in colour. Savoury and brooding on the nose with toasted spices giving way to some honey and fresh nut, but it is a little reticent at this early stage. Oily on the palate with a glycerol richness, this is dense and savoury. Spicy, savoury oak comes through fully with hint of honeyed peach. There is tension and lift from the acidity, but this is full and rounded through to the finish.

From Pougets. The Jadot habit is to show this after the Montrachet, but it manages to stand up all the same. The 2019 is really quite a complex wine. Sunny of course, but not over-ripe, this is definitely a big wine, not much more than 14%, but explosive on the palate. This wine can carry it, but you will really have to wait to enjoy it at its best. Tasted: October 2020
