This is the popular second wine of Chateau Pichon Lalande. There is always a high percentage of Merlot in the blend here which makes the wine soft and easy to drink when young. The 2018 is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. In 2019, the name was changed from Reserve de la Comtesse to Pichon Comtesse Reserve.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Réserve de Pichon Comtesse fulfills the impressive showing from barrel. Beautifully defined on the nose, it offers intense blackberry and briary scents mixed with mint. The medium-bodied palate offers supple but firm tannins and well-judged acidity. Quite dense for a Deuxième Vin, with superb precision on the bold finish. Great value for money, and it will age extremely well in bottle.2024 - 2044

The 2019 Resèrve de la Comtesse is striking, soaring from the glass with scents of violets and rose petals mingled with cassis and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, polished and succulent, it’s lively and seamless, with impressive concentration and a long, penetrating finish. Drink 2021-2041.

A pretty red with blackberry, cherry and currant. Some chocolate and walnut, too. It’s medium-bodied with integrated tannins and a polished finish. Hazelnut at the end. Drink after 2024.

Plenty of tannins that are muscular and dense, clearly signposting a 2nd wine from a high quality estate. Has grip and tension through the palate, with cocoa shavings and fresh acidities. There are black fruits here, a little subdued at the moment, but this is impressive.

Vibrant ruby in the glass, with an effusive nose of fleshy plums and red cherries. The palate is smoky and toasty, adding sweetness to the combination of red and black cherries at the core. This juicy wine is soft, with fine and ripe tannins gently framing the fruit. Generous and approachable, this wine will drink well in its youth.

The 2019 Réserve de la Comtesse is conspicuously deep in colour. The bouquet takes time to unfurl with exceedingly pure blackberry, raspberry and cassis aromas, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is very well balanced with fresh acidity, fine grain tannins, a touch of salinity developing towards the finish that has more grip than previous vintages. Superb. 2024 - 2044

This is well structured and approaches 2010 in terms of its weight and depth of fruit. Deep spiced damson on the nose, you would be hard pressed not to say that this is as good as very many Cru Bourgeois 1st wines. Huge depth, similar to the 2018 but a little higher acidity, a little less round, a little more classic Pauillac in character. This is confident and serious with lots of tannins. A great 2nd wine, and a reminder of the consistently successful winemaking that is happening at this estate. Drinking Window 2024 - 2038
