The 1972 Rivesaltes is missing a little intensity on the nose, scents of orange rind, antique furniture, walnut and light peaty notes that don't quite click into fifth gear. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, touches of mandarin, dried fig, Chinese 5-spice and nutmeg with a precise if not powerful finish. There is just a hint of dark chocolate on the aftertaste, completing a fine Rivesaltes. Tasted with Philippe Gayral. 2018 - 2030
Strong rancio aromas, with some garrigue character as well as classic oil, tar and dried fruits. More fragrant than the Sobilane wines, with a relatively light body.
Light mahogany-copper colour. Smoky, rich in tobacco and old book tones on the nose. There is a more rancio character to this wine, giving it a more Madeira like profile. You can sense the sweetness on the palate, but it is tangy and lively in acidity. Green almonds, sultanas and roasted nuts all come through on a long, saline finish.
