Quinta do Vesuvio 2016

Tasting Notes

The greenness and stalkiness comes through here with a minty, fennel character as well as blueberry and violet undertones. Peppermint, too. Full-bodied and off-dry, showcasing blue fruits and a spicy, fresh finish. Try in 2022

Fragrance the nose has a mix of autumn hedgerow fruits aromatic. The palate has breadth of flavour power and depth in the middle the tannins are fine and quite discreet. There is underlying freshness bramble and bilberry slightly tight at the back with the rich fruit exploding on the finish. 2035-70

Opaque purple in the glass. This has a very spicy nose of Christmas pudding, dried figs, tar and liquorice. The palate is silky and refined, with exotic cocoa, coffee bean and blood orange. The chalky tannins build to the finish, while remaining subsumed beneath the expansive fruits and spices. Acid refreshes any sweetness and gives the wine excellent balance through to the long finish. An approachable and moreish wine that is also desceptively complex and precise.

Very dark blackish crimson. Reminds me a little of the Noval Nacional for its wildness (and foot sweat?!). Rather heady mix of wild herbs and grasses. Very juicy indeed. Massive impact and drama with great grip on the end. Firm tannic grip after all that appeal. Real pace and excitement. Nervy. Convincing dry finish.

Always a radical style of Port, in 2016 Vesuvio doesn’t disappoint with incredibly exotic fruit and a dense, spirit finish. It challenges the senses and requires you to be at the top of your game. Flamboyant and also a little unhinged this is a joyous Vesuvio and a wine which will always bring a smile to my face.

A blend of Touriga Nacional (43%), Touriga Franca (25%), a relatively high proportion of Alicante Bouschet (17%) alongside Tinta Amarela and Tinto Cão: lovely warm country aromas, ripe, open and very full in style, super-ripe cassis broad and fleshy, backed by weighty tannins, leading to a powerful, explosive finish. Very impressive. 1,220 cases in total. 18
