Bottled three weeks ago, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as terrific freshness in its blueberry, violets, raspberry, and spring flower aromas and flavors. Showing the vintages purity and elegance, it still packs ample oomph and richness. Drink it over the coming decade.
The always reliable Coudoulet Rouge once again offers great value for money. Made this year from a classic blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Cinsault, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Floral on the nose, with cherry blossom, ripe strawberries and summer fruits, with just a hint of nutmeg. The palate is ripe and juicy, with a fantastic and intense core of red and black fruits. The tannins are fine and soft, giving the wine great approachability. This will be delicious from release. Smooth, silky and juicy on the long finish, this really is a fantastic wine this year and one of the highlights of the tasting at a very modest price.
Potentially the best Coudoulet I've ever tasted, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel tasted from foudre was singing. Sourced from 80-year-old vines just outside the Châteauneuf boundary, it's incredibly long and rich for a Côtes du Rhône. Black olives, blackberries and spices fill out the palate of this wine, which must surely be considered a bargain when released.
