Tasting Notes

The 2015 Hosanna has a generous bouquet of brambly red fruit, rose petal and hints of fresh fig, all well defined with a ferrous note emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, rounded and velvety smooth. A plush, sensual finish is less mineral driven than I noticed before. This is an excellent Hosanna. I expect that score to go up with bottle age. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, July 2019

The 2015 Hosanna is still a bashful wine at first, only gradually unfurling with blackberry, black truffle, bay leaf and crushed violet. This is clearly keeping everything back for later. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin, perfectly pitched acidity, very focused and harmonious with a deeply impressive, pure, mineral-rich finish that is one of the best I have encountered for this cru. This is going to be a seriously impressive Hosanna. Allelujah! Anticipated maturity: 2023 - 2050.

Neal Martin, -, March 2018

The 2015 Hosanna is a blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc. Now Hosanna is usually quite exuberant on the nose at this early stage, however, this is a very different Hosanna - much more reserved and introverted, yet still complex with a melange of black fruit, undergrowth, truffle and brine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of truffle-tinged fruit, a lovely spicy edge and a persuasive peacock's tail finish that lingers long in the mouth while maintaining wonderful freshness. This is an outstanding Hosanna from the JP Moueix team, perhaps the first vintage to really convince me of its greatness since its debut. Drink 2023-2050.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (224), April 2016

This has the wow factor; it's very impressive. The nose is saturated with dark, rich plums and wet-earth aromas, not to mention the roasted-coffee and crushed-violet undertones. The palate has polished, lustrous appeal, and dark plums and ripe blueberry flavors abound. Long, deep-set tannins with incredible depth. This has x-factor depth and elegance. Best from 2025.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2018

This has the creamy magic texture of all superb 2015 Pomerol. Full and ultra-velvety with a creamy, minerally and citrus rind mouth feel. Amazing depth of fruit. A triumph. 82% merlot and 18% cabernet franc.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2016

A dense, powerful Pomerol, the 2015 Hosanna hits the palate with a huge center of fruit and layers of flavor that open up effortlessly in the glass. Hosanna is easily the most exotically ripe, flamboyant wine in the Mouiex range. Dense, powerful and also quite structured, with huge tannins, Hosanna is going to need at least a number of years before it is at its best. Hosanna is also one of the darkest and most potent Pomerols readers will taste in 2015. 2023 - 2040

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, February 2018

A blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Hosanna had a medium garnet-purple color, charging out of the glass with an exotic perfume of smoked meats, truffles, sandalwood and Indian spices over a compelling core of cherry cordial, blackberry tart and blueberry compote plus suggestions of garrigue and rose hip tea. The full-bodied palate is absolutely laden with taut, muscular black and blue fruits, with a solid frame of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with languidly lingering licorice and spice flavors. Incredibly seductive and just plain delicious right now, hedonists can enjoy this captivating wine while it’s relatively young, while traditionalists can wait ten years and drink it over the next 25 years or more. 2021 - 2053

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com (Interim Fe), February 2018

The 2015 Hosanna is endowed with remarkable depth and intensity. Violet, plum, lavender, tobacco and exotic spice notes make a strong first impression. Deep, layered and pliant on the palate, the Hosanna reveals layer after layer of flavor. The tannins are very much present, but they are nearly buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. Hosanna is 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc from clay/gravel soils.

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, April 2016

Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Unusual top note of green apples. Very rich and sweet and flattering on the palate, though the tannins are a bit rustic. Not the most refreshing…
Drink 2023-2030

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2019

Mid ruby. Broad and floral on the nose. Good attack though a little moderate in impact. Not a blockbuster! But very gentle and mild. Appetising.
Drink 2025-2038

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2016

This small (4.5 hectare) vineyard was formed from the best vines of the former Chateau Certan Giraud. There is 70% Merlot here and 30% Cabernet Franc and the wine tends to be more powerful and muscular than most of the other JP Moueix Pomerols. The blend is 82% Merlot with 18% Cabernet Franc. Deep ruby colour, with a summer pudding nose of red and blue fruits and a hint of smoky brioche and clove. The palate is sumptuous, precise and forward with powerful red fruits at the core. This is fully ripe but finds lifting acidty and soft tannins to give both tension and balance. This is a complex, long and deft wine.

Farr Vintners, March 2016

A monumental wine is the 2015 Hosanna and it’s 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc raised in (I suspect) all new barrels that’s from a single parcel of older vines. One of those rare wines to pair incredible opulence with off the charts elegance and purity, it’s up with the top handful of wines in this vintage and readers should do whatever they can to taste this beauty. Loaded with notions of blackcurrants, black raspberries, toasty oak, truffles, graphite, and spice-box, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, an ethereal, seamless texture, perfect balance, and a huge finish. It’s unquestionably one of the superstars in the vintage and should last for 25-30 years. Hats off to the Moueix team! 2020 - 2050

Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, November 2017

The fruit on the nose is ripe and sweet the start of the palate is rich the mid palate supple with ripe black plum. There is freshness under the sweet fruit brighter at the back with the richness giving depth on the finish. 2025-36

Derek Smedley MW, DerekSmedleyMW.co.uk, April 2016

One of the few Moueix wines that I (slightly) preferred in 2014, this may just need more time.
Structured and firm with lots of smoky oak, firmish tannins and dark, plummy concentration
supported by the graphite freshness of the Cabernet Franc. Drink: 2022-35

Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2016

A structured, powerful wine which doesn’t hold back on the oak, Hosanna is a big-boned beast in 2015 and it will require
10-15 years for this wine to mellow. The fruit is delectable but it is cloaked in raw tannin and no matter how much I
tried to aerate the wine in my glass it stubbornly held onto its austere finish. Given time this will be a temptress but it is
awkward and abrupt right now.
