The 2000 vintage at Château Magdelaine is more powerful in profile than the lovely 2001, but the two are probably comparable in quality and just a bit different in style. The bouquet of the 2000 is really lovely today, jumping from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, sweet dark berries, cigar ash, coffee bean, dark soil tones and a nice foundation of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, structured and rock solid in the mid-palate, with firm, fine-grained tannins, good acids, lovely focus and a long, well balanced and very promising finish. This is going to need at least a few more years in the cellar than the 2001 before it starts to drink with generosity, but it is evolving quite nicely and will be an excellent wine once it is ready to drink. 2030-2090.
This sneaks up on you. Soft, silky red, with berry and cherry character, with an undercurrent of plums and currants. Full-bodied, yet refined and silky. Goes on for minutes on the palate. Best after 2010.
Like most Magdelaines, this wine builds in increments rather than blasts from the glass. A worthy rival to the great 1998, the 2000 Magdelaine has a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of mulberries, black currants, and jammy cherry notes intermixed with mineral, licorice, and a hint of subtle toast. This wine is sweet, expansive, and dense, with the gorgeous fruit hiding some relatively elevated tannin. The finish is long, and this classic needs a good to 4-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.
