One of the great successes of the vintage and certainly better than their 2003 is Beaucastel’s 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape. Deep ruby/purple in color with loads of licorice, smoked game, black cherry and blackberry fruit, along with incense and truffle, the wine has fabulous richness, high tannin, medium to full body, and beautiful length, richness, and purity. This is a beauty and one of the vintage’s finest wines. Give it 4-6 years of bottle age and drink it over the next 25+ years. It has the potential to be one of the longest-lived Chateauneuf du Papes of the vintage.
Ruby-red. Powerful red and dark berry aromas verge on liqueur-like but are enlivened by zesty mineral and anise accents. Lush, supple and sweet, with deep raspberry and cherry flavors, fine-grained tannins and complicating herb and smoked meat tones. Very smooth on the finish, which is sappy, deep in cherry flavor and impressively long.
A powerful, modern style, delivering a torrent of cassis and cocoa notes backed by a wave of tar and fig paste. Densely structured, with floral and mineral hints. Pure and driven; steel-plated for the long haul. Best from 2008 through 2027.
Dark red color. Sweet, lush but energetic aromas of bitter cherry, redcurrant, rhubarb, espresso and damp earth. Silky and fine-grained, with a wonderfully suave texture and youthful, primary dark berry, singed cherry and licorice flavors. The very fine, dusty tannins perfectly frame the sweet, fresh red berry flavors. Finishes seamless and very long.
The 2004 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is far superior to the 2003, a wine of considerable richness, tremendous intensity, and impressive definition and length. Usually a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 40% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, Counoise, and other varietals, the 2004 shows a dense purple color to the rim and a big, sweet nose of licorice, blackberries, pepper, Asian tea, spice, and a balsamic note. The wine has fabulous richness, great freshness, full body, and sweet, velvety-textured tannins. This wine should be approachable young, but hit its peak in about 7-8 years, and last for two decades or more.
Throughly primal, with a torrent of raspberry and boysenberry fruit rushing forth. Only shows hints of its full range, with licorice, incense, graphite and mocha flavors fluttering in the background. Has an iron-clad structure, with a long finish that shows great cut and grip. Best from 2009 through 2025.
