Tasting Notes

The 1970 L'Evangile is a vintage that I have not tasted for quite some time. Four bottles were opened at Bordeaux Index's launch party for my book. What a splendid choice. Fragrant on the nose, it unfurls delicately, revealing nuanced vestiges of red fruit, tobacco and sous-bois, a little rustic perhaps yet charming. The palate is cut from a similar cloth. Fresh and nicely poised, this does not set out to blow your mind, yet it offers exquisite harmony and finesse. The Cabernet Franc imparts savory hints on the finish. Delightful. Although not terribly forthcoming on the nose, there is a definite sweetness of fruit here that provides a surprising impression of youth, and on tasting this surprise is further compounded by a remarkable weight and depth on the palate. I detected diverse flavours of caramel, cherry, raisins and tangerine in the mouth, accompanied by a soft tannic backbone and good acidity. The finish is beginning to dry out a little, but this is a lovely example of a fully mature Pomerol. Peter Newton, Farr Vintners Dec 2005
