Huilkrans, Alheit Vineyards 2023

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Huilkrans comes from dry-farmed Chenin Blanc in the Citrusdal Mountains. This has a very stony bouquet, perhaps the most austere amongst Alheit's cuvées this year. It’s very minimalist in style. The palate is taut and fresh, revealing orange pith and a touch of mango. It’s harmonious and smooth, with a dusting of white pepper on the finish. Very fine, but distant. (Drink between 2025-2035)

Still very youthful, this has notes of white pears, papayas, oranges, wild herbs, pomelo and oyster shells. It’s medium- to full-bodied, focused and flavorful as well as deep and mineral, all tied together with tension and acidity. From old-bush vines on Skurfberg (Citrusdal Mountain). Drinkable already but better after 2025.
