The 2016 Pouget has a well-defined bouquet with touches of dark chocolate emanating from the new oak, although there seems to be sufficient fruit tucked behind. The medium-bodied palate delivers rather sharp tannins, although the finish seems to lack a bit of body and feels somewhat attenuated at present. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Currant and condensed berry aromas pop out of the glass. Medium body, soft and silky tannins and a clean and delicate finish. Drink or hold.
This has improved since en primeur, a good quality wine but not as typical of Margaux as some, although reflective of the style of the property. Bitter dark chocolate as it opens in the glass leads to powerful smoked bacon and almond flavours, joined by touches of black olive; even the texture looks rich and silky. The tannins are brooding and powerful, and the wine is pretty dark in its overall feeling - a little sombre and definitely going to take its time. 7% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.
