An open and floral nose with a perfume of honeysuckle, roses and grapefruit. Intense and immediately appealing. Some ginger, citrus and smoky, flintiness. The palate is clean, mineral and very fresh with plenty of zesty, zippy, lime and bergamot. There’s a lovely cut of acidity through the core with a generous and creamy stone fruit opulence. Real tension and poise with a long, elegant, refreshing finish. This 2nd Edition Evremond is certainly serious step up in quality from the first.
"Second release of this Taittinger project in Kent, this time 80% based on the cooler, wetter 2021 vintage rather than the 2020. Rounded out by some 2020 and a little 2019. A bit more Pinot Noir this time, 65% rather than the debut release’s 55%. Chardonnay portion reduced from 35% to 25%. Each cuvée contains 10% Pinot Meunier, is aged three years on lees and has a dosage of 7 g/l, but of course this second edition has presumably benefited from a year’s more vine age.
Surprisingly rich, creamy nose – a nod to Comtes de Champagne?! Much broader than Edition I, arguably less refreshing in fact, but a wine for food perhaps? (It’s not to be released for a few months.) So ripe, I’m not sure I would guess it was English if served it blind. The estate's Classic Cuvée Edition II is based on the 2021 vintage (80%), complemented by reserve wines from 2019 and 2020, and has spent three years on lees, finished with a dosage of 7g/L. Toasty lemon pith and golden apple on the nose. Zingy bubbles on the attack; the creamy, inviting mousse unveils white pepper-dusted yellow plum, golden apple and salted lemon. Bright acidity and mineral freshness provide drive and lift, leading to greater breadth and layering on the mid-palate. The finish is cleansing and fresh.
Edition II is built around the 2021 harvest, with reserve wines from 2020 and 2019 adding layers of complexity to the blend. In spite of a colder, wetter growing season, the wine retains the essential identity sought from the outset: structure, a floral lift, and purity of fruit.
It is precise and linear, with the Classic Cuvée’s trademark minerality and salinity - heightened by the added maturity of vines, now a year older.
