The organic Cavallotto 2020 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a wine defined more by structure than fruit at this stage of its evolution. Tight and restrained, it emphasizes length, firmness and architectural precision over immediate generosity. The palate is angular and tightly stacked, with tannins that remain prominent and a linear profile that suggests considerable aging potential. There is no shortage of material here, but the wine clearly needs time to flesh out and allow its components to knit together. Built for the long haul, this is a classic cellar candidate that rewards patience. This is a release of 5,333 bottles.
Castiglione Falletto. Lustrous deep ruby with orange tinges. A little more closed and brooding on the nose than the Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe with marasca cherry layered with savoury-sweet spice notes. Lush and slow to unfurl on the palate with lashes of succulent cherry fruit and bags of chewy tannins that demand more time to integrate. Plenty of stuffing and structure on the finish.
