The 10th vintage of Chardonnay Vrede, this hails from a 1.5-hectare block planted on stony, bokkeveld shale soils just over a kilometre from the Atlantic. Quite fragrant, with pretty white flowers and lemon posset on the nose offering plenty of volume whilst remaining focussed. Very long and pliant in the mouth with plenty of detail - zesty key lime, semi-dried mango and green peppercorn. Delicious from the get-go, with moreish acidity and glossy fruit at its core.
Matured for 11 months in 228-litre barrels, 29% new. The nose shows lime, lemon and herbs plus hints of nuttiness and dough. Extraordinary purity and presence, lip-smacking acidity and a pithy finish. A wine of considerable complexity. Alc: 12.98%.
