Cuvée 1949 refers to the date of this plot. Mix of new wood from François Frères and a five year old barrel. Glowing purple with impressive density. Classic François Frères new wood marks the nose a bit. Richer and more muscular, this will need longer to come round than the regular Echezeaux, a more powerful wine still generally in the same register.
A very ripe yet still appealingly fresh nose reflects notes of plum and cassis liqueur with a plethora of spice elements, all of which is trimmed in subtle wood. The richer and more voluminous big-bodied flavors flash excellent power and drive on the palate coating and impressively long finish. This is a big Ech, indeed it's borderline robust and the dense but fine tannins make it clear that this was built-to-age. (Drink starting 2033)
