The Ava Syrah is only in its third iteration, but it has already joined the ranks of South Africa's elite reds. Made with fruit from a small parcel within a larger, ten-hectare vineyard on schist next to Porseleinberg and a small portion from Papkuilsfontein in Malmesbury, it's an elegant, effortlessly refined Syrah with a medley of pomegranate, bramble and black olive, subtle Mediterranean garrigue, impressive focus and minerality and sculpted tannins. What poise! What grace! What palate length! 2025-35.
Intense olive, white-pepper and herbal aromas to this savory syrah. Thyme, oregano and wild herbs. It’s medium-bodied, superbly fresh and peppery with lightly crunchy, tight tannins. Excellent concentration at only 12% alcohol. Salty finish. Whole-bunch fermentation. From two vineyards in the Swartland on schist soils. Drink or hold.
Dark blackish crimson. Lots of leather in this attempt at a South African Hermitage. Masses of tannin and potential! But put it away for now.
