Tasting Notes

The 2023 Lotter comes from Cinsault vines planted in 1932 that produce naturally low yields. This was 100% destemmed and aged in three 500-liter French barrels. It has a detailed redcurrant and pomegranate nose commingling with wild mint, fennel and a touch of thyme. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, piquant red fruit and a dash of white pepper toward the finish. Linear in style, it has a dry, almost "aloof" finish that keeps you coming back for more. Superb. 2025-2042

From a Franschoek vineyard palnted in 1932, this Cinsault has a high degree of purity and really blossoms with time in the glass. Mid to pale ruby in the glass, the initial fragrance is all red fruit blossoms, crunchy red berries and a hint of wild white flowers. With air, more redolent but ethereal red fruit and flower tones come through. The palate is built around this same elegant, pure but intense fruit, with chalky tannins and vigorous, refreshing acidity. There is a sheen of the warmer climate but as is the case with well made Cinsault this is built around finesse and harmony. Very long and airy on the finish, this keeps getting better with air. Sapid and moreish.
