Owned by the Vajra family, the Baudana wines are becoming well known for energy and precision at an extremely fair price. Galloni calls it “one of the most under-the-radar estates in all of Piedmont.” The wines are sensual, perfumed and complex, textured and viscous whilst maintaining a laser-like focus thanks to noticeable acidity.
The fantastic 2021 Cerretta from Luigi Baudana has balsamic aromas of camphor and menthol that mix with violet, spice and berry sensations. Cool, complex and elegantly structured with class and a wild streak – a vinous personification of the Door’s Jim Morrison in his iconic black leather pants and white shirt – the racy palate features strawberry compote, orange zest, star anise and menthol alongside vibrant acidity and taut, refined tannins. It’s still youthfully austere and needs time to fully unwind.
This wine is not as simple as it seems at first. On the nose it shows an assertive, floral style with subtle fruit, violets, restrained roses, vibrant red currants, cherry stones, licorice and dark spices. Austere on the palate, with crisp acidity, a full body and firm, dusty, youthful tannins. It’s not easy at the moment, but it’s of good quality. It deserves a lot of time for its huge structure to resolve.
Starting off a bit slower than the other wines in this flight, the Luigi Baudana 2021 Barolo Cerretta is quite nervous and tightly wound at this point. Cerretta in Serralunga d'Alba is known for its powerful, age-worthy wines. Despite that initial shyness, this bottle does reveal layers of sweet fruit, grenadine and tart cherry. The wine is nicely balanced with chalky, elegant tannins.
